Ministry of Environment plans tougher penalties for illegal extraction of amber

Ministry of the Environment is working on a draft amendment to the Geological and Mining Law Act, under which amber is to be covered by mining ownership. According to the Ministry, more than 10 tons of amber are sold each year, whereas it is only 600 kilos that are extracted legally. The amendment provides for higher fees for extraction of amber as well as tougher penalties for illegal prospecting or exploring thereof. Legal counsel Grzegorz Wąsiewski discusses the proposed law in an interview for the Newseria Biznes information agency.
